Planting Bulbs for a Beautiful Spring

Good garden design takes all seasons into account, considering a plant scheme that will bring structure, interest and colour to your garden throughout the year.
We’re always thinking ahead and autumn is the perfect time to plant bulbs for beautiful spring and summer displays.
The ideal spot for planting will be sunny with well-drained soil. We like to fill gaps in borders where perennials will die back, or layer in larger borders to create successive swathes of vibrant colour.
Bulbs are wonderful for providing seasonal blooms between structural foliage in raised planters and window boxes or containers. Among our personal favourites are early flowering snowdrops and low growing crocuses which can also be naturalised in a lawn.
Bluebells, daffodils and tulips provide pleasure through the spring, with alliums and dahlias creating interest through the warm summer months. Where space allows, we generally plant in small, irregular groups to create a natural feel, or use odd numbers in containers and window boxes.
Alliums work well individually or in threes, tulips in groups of five or seven, and daffodils in larger clusters to rise from the soil like beautiful bouquets.
After flowering the foliage needs to be left a little while to die back naturally, so the bulbs can store the energy to provide healthy blooms the following year.
Containerised bulbs can then be replanted in your borders or stored to plant next autumn.
